Men’s Health: Has anyone checked in with Dad lately?

A chiropractor performs a spinal adjustment on a patient lying face down on a treatment table in a clinic room.

He’s up before the house stirs and out the door before anyone can say goodbye. He carries all the shopping in from the car in one trip, because two feels like admitting something. The niggle in his lower back has been there since fixing the deck back in April, and he’s stopped mentioning it, mostly because nobody’s asked in a while. He’ll push through a headache, a bad night’s sleep, a rough week at work. Ask him how he’s going and he’ll say “yeah, good mate”… and most days, he believes it.

At some point it moves beyond toughness, and it becomes a bad habit. Underneath the “yeah, good”, a dad’s nervous system is still sending signals. It’s just that a lot of blokes have spent years training themselves not to listen for them.

We talk to lots of mums in the studio about the analogy of the luxury car versus the trusty Hilux. A finely tuned European sports car flashes “check engine” the moment something’s a little off, and most owners take that seriously… you wouldn’t leave an expensive car making a strange noise for six months and hope it sorts itself out. It’s sensitive, it’s well maintained, and it gets looked at early. But a lot of dads run more like a Hilux. Reliable. Uncomplaining. Built to just keep going, and going, and going, over any terrain you put in front of it… until one day, many hundreds of thousands of kilometres later, the engine blows up.

Here are some of the ways we see it show up in the dads who come through our doors.

Fatigue that’s not really helped with sleep. He’s getting his six or seven hours, more or less, but he still wakes up feeling like he never switched off. That’s often less about hours in bed and more about a nervous system that’s been stuck “on the gas” for so long it’s forgotten how to properly rest.

A short fuse. Snapping at the kids over something small, then feeling rotten about it five minutes later. A nervous system under sustained pressure doesn’t have much spare capacity left for patience.

Trouble switching off. He’ll sit down for ten minutes, then he’s up again… mowing, fixing, scrolling, anything but still. Holidays are spent finding jobs to do around the house. For a lot of dads, stillness feels uncomfortable rather than restful, and that’s worth paying attention to.

An ache he’s stopped noticing. Somewhere along the way, the sore shoulder or the tight back stopped being a problem and just became part of who he is. “That’s just my shoulder” becomes a genuinely concerning statement.

None of this makes a dad weak, or broken, or bad at his job. It usually just means his body has been carrying a heavy load for a long time, with very little acknowledgement along the way. The “check engine” light on the dashboard has faded into a dim, unrecognised blur.

An earlier night here and there helps. So does turning down the extra coaching commitment, or finding ten quiet minutes before the kids are up. We’d never talk a family out of the basics. But when a nervous system has been running hot for months or years, sometimes it needs a hand finding “off” again… and that’s a lot of what care at Being is about. Not fixing dad. Supporting the system that’s been quietly holding everything together.

This Father’s Day, we want to make it easy for the dads in our community to check in. We’re welcoming dads into the studio for a complimentary initial consultation, report of findings and first adjustment… no cost, no catch, just an invitation to check the engine for once, instead of waiting for the blow-up. Bring the kids along if that’s easier, or come in on your own for an hour that’s just yours.

We’d love to help.
